The E. D. Nixon Institute has successfully established an impressive record of important topical programs. The first, meant to introduce the concept to the local community, was held at the National Center Annex on a Sunday afternoon, April 22, 2002. Subsequent programs have focused on important local civil rights personalities, political events and impact programs which have affected the Black Community in various ways.
Combating Fear, Intimidation & Violence
The E.D. Nixon Institute for Research and Cultural Enrichment at Alabama State University hosted a program commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Riders’ Incident in Montgomery. The event reflected on the courage of the Freedom Riders and the lasting impact of their struggle for civil rights. Featuring guest speaker Mark Potok, Director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, who addressed the continuing challenge of confronting hate and preserving the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.
