Named in memory of the noted ASU graduate and civil rights leader, the series
honors the legacy of well-known and little-known activists who contributed to the
success of the modern civil rights movement. Lectures and other programs featuring
scholars, community leaders, educators, and artists focus on a different theme each
year.
Alabama State University commemorated the 58th Anniversary of the Montgomery
Bus Boycott through the Ralph D. Abernathy Civil Rights Lecture Series, an event dedicated
to reflecting on the boycott’s historic impact and its role in shaping a new vision
of America. Held on December 2, 2013, the program featured renowned civil rights strategist
and nonviolence philosopher Rev. James Lawson as the keynote speaker. The event honored
the courage and activism of those who participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott while
highlighting the enduring power of organized, disciplined nonviolent action in the
ongoing pursuit of social justice and equality.
